Now more than four years old, the Be My Eyes app has grown into something bigger and more dynamic than we ever imagined. All day every day, Be My Eyes calls circle the globe, connecting total strangers to collaborate, problem solve and explore. Our app is fueled by more than 2 million people, and bridges communities from every country with access to the internet. Our users are parents, professionals, students and teachers. And as our community has grown, so has our desire to tell the stories that motivate and shape the lives of people who are blind or have low vision around the world.

Each Be My Eyes call means a chance to get a new perspective. Each call means teaming up to improve each other’s lives in small ways. Each call means learning from someone new, perhaps on the other side of the world.  A call might compel you to look at the world a little differently, or simply inject some randomness and fun into your day. Everyone’s takeaway is different. But each phone call, like our community as a whole, is built on the social interactions people with all types of vision, coming together to share information.

As a part of Be My Eyes, you are a part of the biggest blind-sighted team out there. And even though we reach people all over the world, Be My Eyes is only one part of someone’s day, one part of their lives. But what about what goes on beyond our community? We want to share more stories about what it’s really like to live as a person who is blind or has low vision, and what it truly means to be helpful. We want to draw even deeper connections and share more info about how to live a full, satisfying life. So we made a podcast.

In our bi-weekly Community Stories, Be My Eyes volunteers and users share what the app brings to their morning routine; how it saves them time and breaks down obstacles in their day; the difference it made on their first day of college; or how the app might spark a new creative endeavor. The Be My Eyes podcast takes things a step further and speaks to what it’s like to live non-visually in a sighted world. How does a blind person raise their kids? What’s it like to travel the world non-visually? What other visual interpreting tools are out there? What about dating? Or drugs? Do people have different relationships to their vision or disability? How can we tackle stigma or barriers through storytelling?

The Be My Eyes Podcast dives into all of these questions and more with experts, enthusiasts and professionals from both inside and outside of the Be My Eyes community. Tune in for people you’ll want to meet, stories you’ve gotta hear, and actionable information. Join us on your favorite podcast platform, every two weeks starting July 16.
