Episode Transcript

Will Butler:

You're listening to Say My Meme, the podcast that describes the Internet's best memes for those of us who can't see them. I'm Will from Be My Eyes, and I'm joined today as I am every Monday by my cohost, Caroline from Scribely. Well...

Caroline Desrosiers:

What's up?

Will Butler:

A lot of things running through my head right now.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah?

Will Butler:

I'm getting my second vaccine in a little bit here, so I'm a little nervous. I don't know. Caroline, do you have anything that can calm my nerves a little bit?

Caroline Desrosiers:

How about some weed memes?

Will Butler:

Oh!

Caroline Desrosiers:

Almost as good as actually smoking weed.

Will Butler:

Maybe even better, honestly. You get the chill buzz without the crippling anxiety.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Right. Right. Yeah. The anxiety is real. It's kind of like a toss up, right? It's supposed to relieve your anxiety, but it could also cause it.

Will Butler:

Yeah, that's always been my issue with weed.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, same.

Will Butler:

Do you care to speak on your relationship with the magical green substance? In vague terminology.

Caroline Desrosiers:

With the devil's lettuce?

Will Butler:

You're from Cali. So we can only make assumptions about your exposure to this evil, evil fruit.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I'd say I'm a social smoker, but because of COVID and the lack of socializing, I just haven't smoked in a while. And because of the anxiety thing we're talking about, I don't want to add that in. I don't want to add to the problem.

Will Butler:

I don't want to add to the hole in the ozone layer, so I don't partake. I still feel like it's totally contraband and I forget that it's totally not.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know, it still feels a little naughty.

Will Butler:

There's like Republican senators investing in weed startups. It's like, this is fully here.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Right, right.

Will Butler:

But, in honor of 420, which is I believe tomorrow, we're going to bring you all some weed memes, and the Instagram is cracking, Caroline.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. It's kind of fun, because if you listen to the podcast on Monday and you're like, "I like those memes, those were good memes," and then-

Will Butler:

What do they look like?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah! And then they pop up on your feed all week, kind of fun.

Will Butler:

Yeah. It's a great way to engage. You can share them with friends. You can even send them to blind people. It's so cool. And they're like, "Haha, I get it because it's been described."

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, good point.

Will Butler:

Pretty sweet. Well, okay. We're going to do some weed memes today, this is super exciting. I'm not going to make any corny weed jokes. I'm just not going to, because we're adults.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I don't think you should promise that yet. They might come out.

Will Butler:

I know, I'm going to regret saying that. Oh, any high level before we dive into the first weed meme? What'd you learn this week?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Oh my gosh. I mean, I learned all sorts of new things. But we'll just save those for the right moment.

Will Butler:

Okay. All right. Let's just hear weed meme number one.

Caroline Desrosiers:

All right. Starting off strong here. Snoop Dogg throws a look your way, about to exhale, some of that real sticky icky icky. Tagline. Me checking my electric bill. Please don't be high. Electric bill.

Will Butler:

High like Snoop Dogg.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. So he's the punchline here, this image is the punchline.

Will Butler:

I was wondering, that might be an example of a meme where describing the image is actually the last thing you want to do.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Totally. I mean, I debated it because sometimes it's hard. If your description is a little longer, then you might lose people.

Will Butler:

Kills the high.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Kills the high. Yeah.

Will Butler:

I said I wasn't going to do that.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, see. And I called it.

Will Butler:

Okay. You totally did. You know me too well. Any additional thing we need to know about how high Snoop Dogg is?

Caroline Desrosiers:

I mean, it's just like he's giving you the confidence of a veteran stoner in this photo. Looking straight at the camera, red eyes, happy smirk on his face, and he's wearing a black beanie with a very prominent logo that reads Long Beach Clothing Company on the side. Which I love because I grew up close to Long Beach, and that's where Snoop Dogg's from. So he's repping his hometown. And then yeah, there's like a puff of smoke just to his right, and it's most likely a joint. We can presume it's a joint, just out of view.

Will Butler:

Yeah. Can't get much higher than that.

Caroline Desrosiers:

No. And this is part of like a whole series of photos actually, backstage photos from a performance at the Nokia theater back in 2012. So they just had this little photo shoot of Snoop smoking weed.

Will Butler:

I wonder how many photos of him smoking weed there are out there? It's probably just staggering.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, I bet there are so many, because it's just like a lifetime of smoking weed at this point.

Will Butler:

Yeah. Committed. Okay. Meme number two.

Caroline Desrosiers:

So, this is one where I actually am going to reverse the order, but then also say both the tagline and the image. So I'll go tagline first and then describe the image. Looking at your last nug like "Well, like Forrest Gump looks at his very good best friend Bubba when he died right there by that river in Vietnam."

Will Butler:

So I'm assuming the image is Forrest Gump cradling Bubba.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yes, yes it is.

Will Butler:

Oh my God. That is the saddest weed meme-

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know! Well, it's also quite tragic.

Will Butler:

It's totally [inaudible 00:06:57]. I don't know if it's akin to your last nug. Maybe if you live in Antarctica. Oh man. I guess the stoners really, really take it to heart when they run out.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. I mean, it is kind of sad, and I guess it's appropriate. In this photo he's got this, what I would call a very worried, apologetic expression on his face. But what's interesting, and I don't know if you imagined it this way, is yes, he's holding Bubba in his arms, kind of cradling him like a child. Bubba has a gunshot wound in his stomach. But the creator of this meme has photo-shopped a giant nug over Bubba's head. So he actually has like a nug for a head, and it's the perfect angle and everything, they're looking at each other.

Will Butler:

Oh my God. It's so tasteless.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know, it is.

Will Butler:

Bubba, of course for those who don't know, being Tom Hanks' shrimp loving best friend in Forrest Gump.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yep. And they meet when Forrest joins the army and Bubba is his only friend in the army. And in this particular scene, the platoon is ambushed and Forrest is able to outrun danger and he makes it all the way to this rescue location by the river bank. But he's all alone, because he's run so fast out of there. So he decides to turn and run back and try to find Bubba, and ends up grabbing all these injured soldiers and carrying them out. But this is like their last moment together.

Will Butler:

I love when Bubba talks about all the different types of shrimp.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know.

Will Butler:

It's like dank weed, ditch weed, edible weed, weed brownies.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Oh my God. Yeah, we could just spend the rest of this podcast talk about different options.

Will Butler:

What a weird meme. How about weed meme number three?

Caroline Desrosiers:

All right. So for this meme, the image itself is a photo with a sign that has text on it. The text within the photo is actually integrated into the first part of the tagline. So keep that in mind. Corporates cutesy sign above the baked goods on display at the supermarket bakery. Sign reads: baked multiple times per day. Tagline LMAO. Fucking same.

Will Butler:

So is this funny because of the jux... I'm sorry to be such a dork. Is this funny because of the juxtaposition between how corporate this is?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. Well, okay. So it's definitely a corporate sign and this could be at a grocery store, it could be at a market, it could be at a restaurant, like a Souplantation. That's what I thought of-

Will Butler:

Panera-

Caroline Desrosiers:

Or Panera, exactly. Yeah. So-

Will Butler:

RIP Souplantation.

Caroline Desrosiers:

God, I do seriously miss Souplantation. But yeah, it's from the vantage point of a customer standing in front of the display and the sign is hanging just above it. And all the baked items are in this glass container and there are small openings for self-service. The way that they did this... So they have the sign above and then just below that, the creator added what looks like a Snapchat caption with the text that reads LMAO dot dot dot.

Will Butler:

Got it. Okay. So it could even be like a snap.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, it could-

Will Butler:

That someone pulled. Yeah. Interesting. Memes can just be yanked off of social, right? It could be someone's post that wasn't intended as a meme, wasn't designed with meme in mind, right?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Totally, yeah.

Will Butler:

Super interesting. So was that meme number three?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yes.

Will Butler:

Okay. Meme number four.

Caroline Desrosiers:

All right. Farmer wearing the most old MacDonald outfit you've ever seen, shows off the squinty smile he saves just for camera. Tagline: When you can't roll, but you offer to grind the weed. It ain't much, but it's honest work. I like this one.

Will Butler:

That is one that only real weed smokers are going to get.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Right. Well honestly, this one I love and it speaks directly to people like me, because I feel like I'm a bit of a weed princess. Like, I can't do anything.

Will Butler:

It's like, I can use this high tech implement to support the process.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. I'll help. I can't create.

Will Butler:

I mean, if you're really good at rolling a joint, that's something you should put on your LinkedIn or something. I would endorse that skill on LinkedIn.

Caroline Desrosiers:

It's always appreciated.

Will Butler:

Yeah. It's not something everyone can do. It's not much, but it's honest...

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know. Great tagline I feel like you could just take and run with in other scenarios. It's just a good format.

Will Butler:

Right. That could be any number of topics.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I like this one. What I love about this, my favorite part about this meme, is his smile because it's kind of half-hearted, and to me it just looks like he's curling up his top lip to show his teeth, but it's not necessarily a smile. So, he's not used to it. Maybe he's alone a lot or something. But he's just kind of like showing his teeth to you. It's not a smile, and that's my favorite part of this image.

Will Butler:

Yeah. I mean, offering to grind the weed is the least helpful thing.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know. I know. And this guy is actually the real deal. He's a soil health pioneer and Ohio farmer named David Brandt. So he...

Will Butler:

How the hell did you figure that out?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Because you can find anything on the internet.

Will Butler:

Wow, that is incredible.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. What's interesting is this photo was actually posted by the United States Department of Agriculture, and it was part of an article on soil health.

Will Butler:

The photo, not the meme.

Caroline Desrosiers:

The photo, yeah. They take themselves.

Will Butler:

I was like, they're in the game too?

Caroline Desrosiers:

They could be. But yeah, he's the real deal.

Will Butler:

It just reminds me of when we were kids and there was no grinder, and the way to cut up the weed was to put it in a jar and then stick a pair of scissors in there and just start like snipping.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Oh my gosh.

Will Butler:

Did you ever see anyone do that?

Caroline Desrosiers:

No, never. I've never seen that-

Will Butler:

That was the most janky way to grind up weed.

Caroline Desrosiers:

No, I've never seen that, but I guess whatever gets the job done, right?

Will Butler:

The things I've seen in Northern California, let me tell you.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Maybe that's a north Cal thing.

Will Butler:

Yeah. I mean, everybody, the trim. It's a culture up here.

Caroline Desrosiers:

See, I didn't know that.

Will Butler:

Yeah. Everybody trims weed. It's like a whole, yeah... Anyway, I'm not a weed guy. I got to just admit it. I never will be. Weed meme number five. Let's do it.

Caroline Desrosiers:

All right. Number five. Your wacky Vermont uncle cackles in your general direction after hitting that power flower. Tagline: stoner thought of the day. Each time you light your lighter, your lighter gets lighter until your lighter gets so light, it won't light.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. Just sit with that one. Like, whoa. It blew my mind.

Will Butler:

I have thought about that before.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah.

Will Butler:

Yeah. Is that your cat meowing?

Caroline Desrosiers:

That is kitty, finally making an appearance on this podcast.

Will Butler:

Maybe she's just trying to get in on some of that dankness.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, maybe that's what she's feeling this morning. She is 21.

Will Butler:

You need some kitty CBD or something.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know.

Will Butler:

Chill her out.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I know. Yeah.

Will Butler:

I'm not going to lie to you Caroline. Some of these weed memes are kind of dumb.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah. Well, I mean that's part of the culture.

Will Butler:

Right, right. We have to respect that part of the weed culture.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, you do.

Will Butler:

If we went too high level, we would be accused of being in an ivory tower.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Or just trying too hard.

Will Butler:

Yeah. That we are not.

Caroline Desrosiers:

No, no, we're not. So I don't know if you pictured Michael Kane when I described that, but this is a frame from Children of Men and his character Jasper is a home grower and he's smoking weed on a couch in his living space, with stacks of books everywhere. Because I think he's a professor or something like that. But several healthy marijuana plants visible in the background, and he has white wavy shoulder length hair, part on the side. He's just giving you those Vermont uncle vibes, and smoking and leaning in and laughing to tell you something. Yeah.

Will Butler:

I mean, I like to think that when the next apocalypse hits, when the world does end, I feel like the stoners are going to still going to be hanging on. Wow. What an incredible week. And it's earth day this week too, so very appropriate.

Caroline Desrosiers:

It is. Yeah, very important. Be like the Ohio farmer and do something good for the earth this week.

Will Butler:

Do you think they schedule... Do you think they think they put earth day on this week on purpose?

Caroline Desrosiers:

I don't know which one came first, actually. That's interesting.

Will Butler:

Where did 420 even come from?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Oh my God, so I looked this up and I don't know if this story is even real, but it's from your neck of the woods up in Marin, so the story goes. It's just this group of high school kids that... This is at least what I read, I don't know if it's true, but they would meet up every day after school at 4:20 and go try to find this dude's crop of plants nearby. And so they'd go over, wander around in Point Reyes trying to find this and he gave them some sort of treasure hunt map. And they're like...

Will Butler:

What?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, I don't know. But they met at 4:20 and they said that this wouldn't be a thing, except a lot of these kids knew or were somehow connected to members of the Grateful Dead. And then it caught on after that, and that's the story. I looked up several articles and they all say the same thing. So, I don't know if that's how it originated, but that's the story at least.

Will Butler:

Wow. That's wild. If any of the listeners know anything about this story, send us your weed memes. We will put them on the podcast and we will give you a platform to spout your silly, ignorant, base cannabis memes. Oh God, I'm going to get in trouble for that too. Well, it's been a great show this week. And Caroline, can we tease what we might be doing next week? I don't know if we can yet.

Caroline Desrosiers:

I don't know.

Will Butler:

I think we have to keep everybody guessing.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, let's keep people guessing.

Will Butler:

Did you hear the turducken meme on the show last week?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, I love that one. That one was super funny and props to our first person to describe a gif as well.

Will Butler:

Yeah, he did a really good job.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Yeah, he did. Because those are tricky, right? There's a lot happening.

Will Butler:

One goes in the other, the other in the other. I love it.

Caroline Desrosiers:

It's just like the sequence. Yeah. And the Charlotte's web meme, fantastic.

Will Butler:

Yes. Very dead pan, right?

Caroline Desrosiers:

Oh yeah!

Will Butler:

[inaudible 00:21:00] is a master of deadpan-

Caroline Desrosiers:

Her delivery is fantastic. It gave me all those positive vibes because I loved Charlotte's Web as a kid. But then at the very end it was like, bam. Completely different image.

Will Butler:

Yeah. Well folks, if you haven't checked out the listener submitted memes, we post a couple every week or at least we try to, and they're labeled meme in the podcast feed. Go check them out, and please submit your own. You can do that by just emailing a voice memo to hello@saymymeme.com or go to saymymeme.com and read about how it's done. Anything else, Caroline?

Caroline Desrosiers:

That'll do it.

Will Butler:

All right. We'll see you all next week.

Caroline Desrosiers:

Later.

Will Butler:
