Scott Joffre was born with retinopathy of prematurity in New Hampshire. He’s an accessibility technology tester, a YouTuber, and an avid gamer. Once in the match, he explains the game’s objective to his volunteer — survive, eliminate enemies, avoid the shrinking storm — and from there, it’s a team effort.
“Just tell me if there’s an enemy in front of me, if I’m walking in the right direction, if I’m walking into a wall, if I’m pointing up at the sky,” Scott explains. “Because there are times I do that.”
Scott plays on an iPad, giving him tactile control through the touchscreen — a setup he prefers over an Xbox controller for this kind of play. Having played Fortnite when he had more sight, he already has the muscle memory for mobile gaming. With auto-fire enabled, his main job is aiming his character, and his volunteer’s job is to be his eyes.
The result? Pure fun. And pretty funny, too. “Some of them don’t even know what game I’m playing,” Scott laughs. “And they’re like, I don’t know what you’re doing, but sure, let’s go with it.”
For Scott, Be My Eyes isn’t just a utility, it’s a community. He raves about the quality of his conversations with volunteers, many of which stretch well beyond the original task. “I’m on there for like 15, 20 minutes, sometimes an hour, just chatting,” he says.
That’s where Be My Eyes Groups comes in. The Groups feature allows users to invite trusted people (family members, close friends, or favourite volunteers) into a private group so that sensitive tasks can be handled with someone familiar.
Scott has built real relationships through this feature. “I actually do have a couple of volunteers that are personal volunteers that help me out within the group system, because I just really love talking to them,” he says. “They’re super funny.”
